South Dakota Children's Book Awards

South Dakota Children's Book Awards Logo

The Prairie Bud, Prairie Bloom & Prairie Pasque Children's Book Awards are sponsored by the South Dakota Library Association . Prairie Bud winners are determined by South Dakota kindergarten, first and second grade students. Prairie Pasque winners are determined by South Dakota third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Students are encouraged to read and vote for their one favorite book of the year from the masterlists of titles. The books receiving the most votes from the students win the awards. A committee of educators and librarians select the books nominated for the awards.

2011-2012 Prairie Bud and Prairie Pasque votes are in

Students from grades K-5 recently voted for their favorite books during the 2011-2012 South Dakota Children’s Book Awards competition. Of the 32 books that were chosen by the committee, half represented the Prairie Bud Award, and the other half represented the Prairie Pasque Award.

Following are the results of the Prairie Bud/Prairie Pasque voting:

  • Prairie Bud winner: Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas
  • Prairie Pasque winner: Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and R. Gregory Christie (Illustrator)

Ninety-four schools across the state participated in voting for the awards. At least 11,178 students in grades K-2 voted for a book nominated for this year's Prairie Bud Award, while 5,252 students in grades 3-5 took part in the Prairie Pasque Award voting.
