RE: New information on ordering braille, large print & cassette textbooks for school year 2007/2008

It's now time to place orders for alternative format textbooks for the school year 2007/2008.

Presently, not all of the textbooks that will be ordered are in alternative formats and will need to be produced for your student(s). Production time for some recorded and large print books can take one to three months depending on the complexity of the materials. If the requested Braille books have already been produced we will order the book and it should be shipped within thirty days.

We will work with the teacher, student and parents to make sure that the student always has the materials necessary for each day of class. It is, also, always our intent to provide books in their entirety.

To help this process run more smoothly you should take note of the following:

Filling out Textbook Order Forms
  1. Use one order form per student.
  2. Include contact name, e-mail and USPS mailing addresses, and phone number for summer months as well as for the school year.
  3. When indicating (yes-no) when chapters will be used out of sequence, please include a note or syllabus indicating the desired order.
  4. Send with printed textbooks to allow immediate production.
A master library application, textbook order form with re-binding authorization form, and an RFB&D application are all on our web site: www.sdstatelibrary.com/talkbook.

You may make as many copies of each as you need. The textbook order form and application can even be typed into on-line when using the PDF version. You can call to check if the student is registered with the Braille & Talking Book Library.

Orders for textbooks are completed as received. Books will be produced from page 1 to the end, unless otherwise requested. We cannot guarantee timely delivery of even partial material shipments if changes are requested later. Please, also try to send clean books (without writing, highlighting, or rips) when needing an enlarged or braille version of a textbook made. We would like to produce the best alternative version possible for your students.

Rebinding costs are the responsibility of the school. The print book for those orders to be produced in large print, and some in Braille, will be torn apart. You will need to note on the order form if you want the book(s) rebound. If you would like to know information about cost of rebinding, please contact PheasantLand Industries in Sioux Falls at (605) 367-5143.

Place orders by January 15, 2007. We cannot guarantee availability of the alternative format that you need on September 1st, 2007 if they are not ordered by the required date. Textbooks needed for the spring semester must be received no later than July 15th to have them available in January.

If you have questions regarding the ordering of textbooks, please call the toll-free number 1-800-423-6665 and ask for Karen Duenwald, or e-mail her at talkbkreq@state.sd.us.
