SD Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) information
The South Dakota Braille & Talking Book Library (B&TB) is proud to announce the launching of our Internet based online catalog and ordering site. If you are a registered patron of the B&TB Library, you can now have access to our full holdings catalog in one place at any time.
To use this web site, you must have an Internet connection. The site can be read by most available Internet web browsers. Special care has been taken to make this site accessible for most technology.
To order books from the site, you will need to call the Library at 1-800-423-6665 to:
- Verify your ten-digit identification number for your account, and
- Obtain a password.
Anyone may check the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and search by author, title, subject, narrator, series, and annotation. However, only active library patrons with a User ID and a Password may order books.
Each time a patron submits requests, the OPAC will try to send the minimum number of books that was established for you when you signed up with the Library. If you want to know how many books will be sent, please call the library and talk with your Reader Advisor. The rest will either be put on reserve or on a request list. When a book is put on reserve, a copy will be sent as soon as it becomes available. A book added to a request list will be sent at some point in the future. The OPAC site will tell you which books are being sent, put on reserve, or put on a request list. The site has extensive help files to assist patrons in making better use of the OPAC. The OPAC site will not allow you to order books in a medium for which you are not active. For example, a tape-only reader may not order a braille book on the OPAC site.
The OPAC site will not check to see if you currently have the book you are requesting, nor will it check to see if you have had the book before, or if it violates any of your listed exclusions. Patrons are encouraged to take care in requesting books. If you ask for a book, you will get it. The OPAC will not check to see if the books you have requested will exceed your maximum number of titles. However, the OPAC will not let patrons exceed maximums. If patrons use the OPAC, it is their responsibility to monitor the number of books they get. The OPAC is a very powerful tool for patrons, so it should be used carefully.
For first time users there is a help button on the bottom of the catalog screen. This may be helpful in using the on-line system.
If you have questions about this exciting new part of our service, or would like a User ID and Password, please call us toll-free at 1-800-423-6665 or e-mail talkbkreq@state.sd.us.
