Acquisitions
Need to find a replacement copy of an out-of-print book or the replacement value for a lost book? The following are good sites to start your search. A collection development tutorial was developed by Arizona. To use this tutorial go to: Determining the potential value of an "old" book can be tricky. Check out the following resources for some guidelines. Oyate: A Native organization working to see accurate portrayals of Native Americans in children's literature.
Building and Remodeling
- Public Library Space Needs: A Planning Outline: The state of Wisconsin has published a very helpful guide for determining space needs for public libraries. Whether you are planning a totally new building, an addition, or just a reorganization of the space you already have, this guide will assist in providing adequate space for technology, for staff work areas, etc. A print copy of this guide is available for loan if you cannot download from this site.
- ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG): All new library buildings or buildings that are undergoing substantial remodeling must be compliant with the federal Americans with Disabilites Act.
- While quite out-dated, libraries that are planning space without consideration for technology can consult the Interim Standards for Small Public Libraries: Guidelines Toward Achieving the Goals of Public Library Service, Public Library Association, 1975. The "Guidelines for Determining Minimum Space Requirements" found on p. 15 of this publication are organized by population size. Available via interlibrary loan.
Census

Combined School/Public Libraries

If your community is considering creating a combined school and public library, this publication created by the Wisconsin State Library is a must read. Copyright law is one of the stickier issues that libraries must deal with on an almost daily basis. The Internet has added to the muddle and issues relating to First Amendment rights are being considered at the Supreme Court level.
