Electronic resources provide boredom busters in the library and at home

Yippee! School is out and summer is here; without direction however, the fun can quickly turn to boredom. Prevent boredom with the State Library electronic resources available at your library or from your home computer. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Take a virtual vacation

World Book LogoVisit museums and historical sites via virtual tours in Public Library Edition World Book Online Info Finder. Pick a country and learn about the customs, history and more. The Info Finder’s “Interactive Earth” includes articles, videos and sound clips.

Even more country information is located in SIRS Discoverer “Country Facts.” View a list of historical events along with geographical information and more.

Play a game

World Book Online for Kids offers games for a variety of interests. Paint by numbers while solving math problems or turn on a light bulb when you successfully complete a circuit. Investigate math games, puzzles and more.

Get crafty

World Book Online for Kids provides creative resources for all ages. Activities covering the topics “Make It”, “Think It” and “Be It” contain a complete list of materials and detailed instructions.

SIRS Discoverer LogoArt projects are also available in SIRS Discoverer. Browse through a listing by clicking on “Activities” on the right hand side of the home page under “Database Features.”

Be active

Find out more information about a new sport or activity. SIRS Discoverer has a wealth of information on easy to do at home activities. Find new jump rope games or hula hoop activities by searching for those terms in the search box.

Direct access to all the e-resources mentioned is available from the South Dakota State Library Web site library.sd.gov within libraries and schools in South Dakota, and 24/7 access is available to citizens from home with a library barcode and password. Click on “For Library and School Users” to find the complete list of electronic resources.
