SDSL Electronic Resources Challenge: Summer Edition

In Focus

In Focus: Bell Jacobsen

Bell Jacobsen

For the first 19 years of my life, I lived and roamed in Cameron, Texas, a small town of 5,000 people. I was raised in a Mexican household and spoke Spanish. Then, it was unavoidable and I had to go to parochial school and learn the English language, however, I continued to speak Spanish at home.

In 1971 after meeting and marrying the love of my life, Richard Jacobsen, I left the Lone Star State for the Sunshine State of South Dakota. We were blessed with two children, Richard, Jr. and Isaac.

In 1978 I started working at the State Library. Gee, that was 32 years ago. I am the ILL/Circulation/Mailroom Coordinator. I help facilitate interlibrary loans for libraries in South Dakota by training libraries as necessary for ALEPH ILL2 and OCLC. We will borrow items for libraries if the items are not available in-state. The State Library also does interlibrary loans for state and federal employees. The ILL Department gathers and compiles statewide interlibrary loans statistics which are used for acquiring LSTA funding too.

Along the way I have been mentored by outstanding and great State Librarians, super and intelligent supervisors, and befriended hard working and wonderful co-workers.

Just when I thought that it couldn’t get any better, I now have a grandson, Treyton James, age 7. My hobbies include, but are not limited to, sewing, eating, gardening, watching “Avatar, the Air Bender” with my grandson, listening to music and NPR, watching the sunset and hunting for antiques. Isn’t life grand?
