SWIM Scholars and mentors gather for summit

The SWIM Scholars and their mentors gathered at the State Library on August 3 for a lively informal summit. Each of the scholars has been paired by SDLA and the State Library with an experienced librarian to aid in mentoring them as they go through the MLIS or SME programs over the next two years.

To begin the day, Secretary of Education Tom Oster greeted and congratulated the group followed by comments from State Librarian Dan Siebersma. SDLA President Kay Christensen spoke about the benefits of professional association membership. Assistant State Librarians Colleen Kirby and Daria Bossman, with the help of grant contact Jasmine Rockwell, gave a brief history of the grant process that made the scholarships possible. They also went over future expectations and timelines. Past SDSL Board President Linda Whitney addressed and thanked the group via conference call from her office at Sanborn Central School. To complete the day, Scott Ahola, representing Black Hills State University, joined the school librarians following lunch for a brief discussion of school libraries in South Dakota.

The SWIM grant was made possible through the collaboration of the state libraries in South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana with funding through the Laura Bush Foundation and IMLS.

Library Snapshot Day is coming, will you be ready?

Library Snapshot Day Logo

Library Snapshot Day was developed by the American Library Association to provide a way for libraries of all types to show what happens in a single day at their library.

That’s right, libraries of all types. School, public, academic, and more- if you are a library in South Dakota, we want your participation.

During Snapshot Day, libraries will be asked to share pictures, user comments, videos, statistics, and more- all to illustrate A Day in the Life at your library.

Our event will be held between October 31 and November 6; each library will pick one day during that week as their “snapshot day.” The information submitted will be used to illustrate the impact that South Dakota libraries have every day.

If you would like more information about Library Snapshot Day, come see us at the SDLA Conference. The Library Snapshot Day committee will be participating in the Poster Session during the No Host Social. Stop by our table to talk to the committee and sign up!
