Teen Literacy Contest
Teen Literacy is so important to author, philanthropist, & literacy advocate Donna Labermeier that she is sponsoring a contest for 6th - 12th graders in honor of YALSA's Teen Read Week™! The contest has something for every talent and interest - whether you like acting, writing, public speaking, art, film‐making, music and more.
You can enter under one of these two categories:
- 6th - 8th Graders
- 9th - 12th Graders
The entry deadline is February 16.
Prizes total over $25,000 and will be split evenly between the winning teen and their library, school or program. Books to read for the contest will be shipped to libraries, schools and teens for FREE. For more information and to enter the contest, go to www.healerstrilogy.
ALA/Association for library service to children's "Día" Programs
Do you have Spanish-speaking populations in your community? More than likely you do, but they may not use your library because they do not understand what the purpose of the library is. However, they need library services just the same as everyone else. So take a chance and reach out by doing a Día Family Book Club programs. You can even apply for a grant to help you get started. Fifteen grantees will be awarded $2,000 to initiate a Día Family Book Club Program at their library.
The deadline to apply for a Día Family Book Club Mini-Grant is Nov. 30, 2013. For more information, and the application form, please visit dia.ala.org.
Encourage YARP/SD Teen Choice Award voting
With voting being open for almost two months, there are already over 700 votes! Partner with your local school or public library to hold a Christmas break contest or challenge to help promote more reading and voting. Make sure your teens know where to go to vote!
