Why Didn't I Think of That?

Mikkelsen Library goes to the dogs

Dog in the library

The Mikkelsen Library at Augustana College recently hosted three nights of pet therapy during final exams. Augustana vocal instructor Judy Schreck approached the library staff during the summer with the idea of making her two therapy dogs available for appointments during this stressful time of year. Students could sign up for a ten-minute slot and most flopped down on the floor, petted one of the huge Mastiff mixed breed dogs, and left smiling and relaxed!

Ms. Schreck is the proud owner of two licensed therapy dogs, and she often visits hospitals, nursing homes and schools. The gentle giants were hugely popular and even non-dog people found their calm presence very comforting.

Besides providing an opportunity for some canine companionship, the Mikkelsen Library has served coffee, hot chocolate, and granola bars during finals for the last several years.

Dewey Cheers lead students to favorite nonfiction

Librarian Royanna Stratmoen of Brookings Hillcrest Elementary School found a creative way to teach her students about various Dewey Decimal areas in the library. She created some catchy Dewey Cheers!

Here are some examples of her original chants to help students remember where to find various types of nonfiction books:

978.3 Nine seventy-eight point three,
  South Dakota History!

398.2 Three ninety-eight point two
may have a favorite old book for you!

567.9 Five sixty-seven point nine,
an animal from back in time!

597.3 Five ninety-seven point three,
  animals from under the sea!

796 Seven hundred ninety-six,
  baseballs, basketballs, hockey sticks!

Try to create some of your own. Not only will your students remember what to find in their favorite nonfiction areas, they will want to make up their own!
