The State Library is pleased to announce two new e-subscription resources, available soon to all SD citizens 24/7.
ChiltonLibrary puts your automotive do-it-yourselfers in the driver's seat by placing their authoritative manuals online with monthly updates. It covers thousands of domestic and imported car, truck, van and SUV models from 1940-present and includes repair, maintenance and specification tables. No other source contains more years, makes and models.
Users will benefit from these features:
- Parts finder: helps users locate hard-to-find parts
- Simplicity: detailed, step-by-step give do-it-yourselfers all the necessary information in one place.
- In-depth information: includes diagnostic trouble codes, descriptions, probable causes, step-by-step routines, specifications and troubleshooting guide
- Multimedia content: exclusive videos and animated graphics help to explain system operations
- Photographs: Includes close-up photographs and illustrations
- Diagrams: Vacuum and wiring diagrams help explain complex system operation
Mango Languages offers courses in more than 60 languages to allow patrons to learn, listen and speak their chosen languages. Courses for English learners begin in the student's native language and teach English. Basic courses teach simple, practical skills for common conversation, and Complete 2.0 courses dive into in-depth language and grammar skills. The courses focus on four key areas of language learning: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and culture. A mobile version lets patrons learn wherever they have Internet access. Watch for the addition of Mango Premiere, which uses full-length films to teach language scene by scene, coming soon.
These resources will be available from the list of resources on the State Library website. These and the other resources are directly available within the library and on school and academic campuses. They are available from home with barcode and password.
SD Titles To Go: recent collection addition
Library patrons in 71 South Dakota communities are able to download even more audio and electronic books (ebooks) from their home computers, courtesy of their public libraries.
An amount of one time, fiscal year-end LSTA federal funds was recently made available, allowing the State Library to purchase over 1385 additional e-book and audiobook titles for the shared collection, increasing the collection to over 10,000 titles. This popular collection has over 174,000 circulations since the collaborative was formed in 2011.
The collaborative "South Dakota Titles To Go" was formed as a result of negotiations managed by the State Library. The participating libraries provide the funding for the downloadables, supplied by OverDrive. OverDrive is a digital distributor of ebooks, audiobooks, music and videos.
Downloadable titles are available in a variety of popular genres, including bestsellers, fiction, romance, suspense, children's and young adult, business, self-help and language learning. Downloadable audiobooks and ebooks may be checked out, placed on the patron's computer, burned to a CD or transferred to a portable device such as a Nook, Kindle, iPad or smart phone. They are automatically returned when due.
Other public libraries can still join the collaborative effort. Contact the State Library at 800-423-6665 for details. See the list of participating libraries at South Dakota Titles to Go
