Get Science Fair savvy with SDSL e-resources

Tired of the same old thing for science projects? Need ideas for science-themed programs? Let SDSL e-resources help! In addition to searching for specific science-related articles, our e-resources have special features devoted to science projects.

Pre-School - Elementary

SIRS Discoverer
The Science Fair Explorer in SIRS Discoverer allows kids to discover science in terms of what's around the house. Selecting "the Kitchen" (chemistry) or "the Junk Drawer" (physics) will lead kids to simple experiments about certain areas of science.

SIRS Discoverer's Activities feature has a section of science and nature projects, as well as other science-related sections.

The new Non-Fiction Books feature in SIRS Discoverer contains full-text ebooks covering many science-related topics. By publishers such as DK Eyewitness and Weekly Reader, these full-color books may be read by an unlimited number of children simultaneously.

World Book Kids
Science Projects is a special area on the Kids' home page, with easy-to-do projects done with easy-to-find materials. This section also links to information about researching and reporting for science.

World of Animals on the home page offers facts about a variety of animals, including extinct ones, and gives the ability to compare one animal with another.

In the Games area of the home page, kids can find science games to play online, and in the Activities area, they can find science-related activities.

Secondary

SIRS Issues Researcher
SIRS Issues Researcher offers Leading Issues on Animal Cloning, Energy, Bioethics, Cancer and other science-related topics with a supporting topic overview and up-to-date articles.

The Curriculum Pathfinders feature allows students to select Science and find answers to "How Do I Start a Science Project?," click on "Science Projects" and select topics by specific course for appropriate articles and web sites.

World Book Online Reference Center and World Book Advanced
These World Book modules for high school students through adults provide primary resources if any are related to the search. For example, a search for Charles Darwin brings up the article plus one primary document and other related material.

New World Book Timelines
World Book has enhanced its Timelines feature for more interactivity. Available in Student, Advanced, Info Finder, Academic, Discover, and Online Reference Center, Timelines are compatible with ipad and many Android devices. World Book has created over 400 Timelines on many topics, including science. In addition, you can create your own timeline and upload images to enhance science presentations.

These resources are available from the Online Resources on the State Library website. They are directly available within the library and on school and academic campuses. They are available from home with barcode and password.
