Operation: Military Kids – supporting kids through outreach

photo of Karen RickertKaren Rickert, local representative for National OMK (Operation: Military Kids) Partner, South Dakota Department of Education, spoke to the Pierre/Ft. Pierre Rotary Club on June 23, 2014.

Rickert's OMK work supports those children whose parent(s) are in the military and who have been or will be affected by deployment. Her objectives are to raise community awareness of issues faced by military kids, to build community capacity to deliver outreach services, and to educate people and organizations on the effects of being part of a military family and the effects of deployment.

Rickert attended college at South Dakota State University in Brookings and graduated with a degree in English Education. She then taught for a short time before her more than eight years of employment at the South Dakota State Library.

She began work as the Educational Materials Coordinator and Coordinator of Volunteer Services for the South Dakota Braille & Talking Book Program. For the past nine months, she has been working as a Digital Library Associate where she digitizes state documents for public access through CONTENTdm on the State Library website.
