SIRS Discover new featuresSIRS Discoverer enhances elementary research

SIRS Discoverer, the online magazine and newspaper e-resource for grades K-9, has added two new features to enhance elementary students' research and learning.

Animal Facts contains pages of facts and photos for a variety of amphibians, arachnids, birds, fishes, insects, invertebrates and mammals. Each page covers one creature, with links to more information, MLA citation and SIRS Discoverer special features: read aloud, email, print and share.

Leading Issues helps students develop critical thinking skills. Similar to the Leading Issues in SIRS Issues Researcher for middle and high school students, this SIRS Discoverer feature offers Leading Issues pages for topics of interest to elementary teachers and students. ASHD, Bullying, Cheating, Homework and Youth Sports are examples. Each Leading Issue is comprised of a topic overview, terms to know, essential question with links to supporting material for the pro side and con side, more viewpoints, visual literacy, critical thinking questions, links to more information and an MLA citation.

Both of these features are found under Database Features on SIRS Discoverer's home page.

SIRS Discoverer and other e-resources are available from the Online Resources on the State Library website. They are directly available within the library and on school and academic campuses and available from home with barcode and password. Contact Julie Erickson, email or Jane Healy, email, State Library Electronic Services Coordinators, for more information.

E-Resources: What info is where?

"Where are those historical maps?"

"Which World Book module has Life Skills?"

"What resources are iPad compatible?"

The e-resources contain so much information that keeping it all straight is a challenge. The Electronic Services Coordinators have created a Quick Guide (PDF) for your reference. Bookmark or print, and be ready to answer e-resources questions!
