BranchOut 2014 conveyed a "culture of reading"

By Sarah Easter, SDSL staff

SDSL staff at D W U

This year 39 people attended BranchOut on the beautiful Dakota Wesleyan University campus in Mitchell. BranchOut is a great opportunity for library support staff to attend a continuing education event. The State Library took three vehicles of people to the conference. It was a great chance for staff to learn from and interact with the speakers and support staff from other libraries and schools. We also had some good team building with our coworkers who we might not otherwise interact with during a typical workday in the office.

Sessions were held in the McGovern Library and covered a range of topics: kids and reading, YA books, interlibrary loan. State Library staff presented on SD State Government document information, databases, and cataloging. Keynote speakers included author Jason Glaser and Minitex Director Valerie Horton.

conversing with speakers

Some ideas from speakers on how to promote a "culture of reading":

  • Put up an "ask me to read to you" sign
  • Have bring your own device events during other school events to download, set-up, and start e-book apps
  • Set-up audio book listening stations
  • Promote reading lists/peer recommendations that your patrons put together
  • Have a "read your favorite children's book to some kids" event

attending luncheon

Here are a few tidbits to mull over from the closing keynote on Deep Collaboration by Minitex Director Valerie Horton.

Even if you don't know what the future holds - collaboration is critical.

No single library -- no matter the size - can compete alone in today's marketplace. We value what we build together. We value what we put our resources into and commit to. Collaboration is difficult but essential.
