Start the school year with the 20 minutes 24/7 pledgeread twenty minutes every twenty four hours - seven days a week logo

Summer is officially over but reading is year-round and an essential life-long skill. Start the school year by having your students take the 20 minutes 24/7 pledge. Feature the pledge with parents in your back-to-school open house, at a family literacy night, on your library webpage, or in your school newsletter. The pledge follows all privacy guidelines and requires nothing further, except reading!

Also, remember to keep visiting the Read! SD webpage and following the Read South Dakota Facebook page for great literacy information. Use these resources to further your partnership with your local public library all year and get a head start on co-planning for summer reading in 2015.

New librarians, no need to feel like a fish out of water!

feel like a fish out of water?

Welcome to the South Dakota library world! School libraries are wonderful places to work - full of fun and fascinating information. They can also be confusing sometimes, especially when you are a new librarian. But there's no need to feel like a fish out of water! The State Library can help you navigate this new world and we've gathered some information all on one webpage that will help guide you.

School library coordinators, Marta Stirling and Joan Upell, are available via email, marta.stirling@state.sd.us, joan.upell@state.sd.us, and phone, 1-800-423-6665, to answer any and all questions. Site visits to consult with new librarians are also a priority each fall, so if you don't hear from us soon, let us know when you are ready for a visit!

School Library Summit sets collaborative goals for 2014-2015

Educators and librarians from across the state met on July 23 on the USD campus in Vermillion to brainstorm about the future of school libraries. Goals and action steps were developed in the areas of grant writing, collaborating partnerships and school library development.

Now in its third year, the Summit is co-sponsored by the SD Library Association and the State Library. A complete summary and information from previous years may be found at bootcamp2014.wikispaces.com.

This information is also available in .pdf and Excel formats. Librarians and classroom teachers alike can use this information for reader's advisory and classroom instruction. The website also includes fact sheets on text complexity and the balance between recreational and instructional reading for educators and parents. The parent fact sheets would be a great resource to share with parents during your back-to-school open house to encourage the reading in the classroom, library, and home. Keep your eyes open for additional changes and additions on the Prairie Bud and Prairie Pasque webpage!
