Take a first look at the FY2014 Public Libraries Survey statistics

The FY2014 Public Libraries Survey closed last month and we thank all of our public library directors and staff for 100% participation!

Our public libraries are supported by their communities. Local revenue has increased almost 5% from FY2013. Measures such as visitation and circulation continue to decline, however circulation of electronic materials like e-books and downloadable audiobooks is up by 21% from last year. SD libraries continue to increase programming opportunities for all ages. Young adult programs were up 19% between FY2013 and 2014! Access to public computers remains an important service of libraries. Sessions on public computers have increased even as more visitors bring their own devices to libraries to use the free Wi-Fi that 86% of SD public libraries now provide.

Here's a brief one-year and five-year comparison of the latest survey data from SD public libraries:

Local Revenue

Salaries & Benefits

Library Materials Expenditures

South Dakota public libraries' customer satisfaction survey results show good feedback

This survey (PDF) is based on additional questions the State Library put on the Public Library Survey this year. We had 100% (for the second year) response rate to the actual survey. We had a 74% response rate to these optional customer service questions. The customer service survey questions applies to all of the State Library staff except for the B&TB unit which conducts its own customer service surveys of their patron base.

As you can see the responses on the graph, we had outstanding results and good/honest feedback. There is still room for improvement despite the great responses.

There has been tremendous change and improvements at the State Library during the past 8 years when SD was last in the nation for a local response rate on the Public Library Survey and our customer service beyond our walls and outside of Pierre was not always consistent. Our refocus is paying off. We always appreciate your comments and feed-back anytime!

We are proud of our State Library team and what we are doing to improve the educational landscape of South Dakota!

Daria Bossman, State Librarian

Reminder: disc repair service at the State Library

The South Dakota State Library is offering the service of repairing compact discs to all South Dakota libraries. This new equipment was paid for by federal LSTA funding through the South Dakota State Library.

disc repair system in use at the State Library

Libraries can send up to 50 damaged discs (not titles) at a time to the State Library for repair. Libraries can also send discs that are working, but need to be cleaned. The library must be able to pick up the items at the State Library or arrange for delivery through the courier or some other means. The library sending the material to the State Library is responsible for all delivery costs.

Types of media that can be repaired include:

  • CDs - Music, Data, RW, R formats
  • DVDs - Blu Ray, HD DVD, Single and Double Sided
  • Video Game Discs (Not cube or beveled discs. Contact the State Library before sending game discs.)

Damages that cannot be repaired include:

  • Cracks
  • Warping
  • Dents

Libraries should complete the form found on the State Library's website.

The form is to be sent with the discs to the State Library. Discs must be sent in their cases. Allow up to four weeks for processing. The State Library is not liable for items that might be lost in transit.

If you have questions about the Disc Repair Service, please contact Barb Nickolas at 1-800-423-6665, option 4 or email.

State Library plans additional digitization projects

The state library digitization team spent much of 2014 digitizing some historical publications from the Department of Public Instruction (now the Department of Education) to highlight for the SD 125th celebration. We now look to other projects that fit with our strategic plan. The focus for digitizing state publications is on those materials that will be of research and historical value. Some new projects that have been identified include:

  • Governor inaugural addresses, 1891-1978
  • Superintendent of public instruction annual reports, 1886-1969
  • Railroad commissioners reports, 1890-1939

These, among others, will be the focus for work in 2015. Visit the SD State Agency Historical Publications., a website for learner drivers

In addition to being the largest and most visited independent online driver education provider in the U.S., currently works with over 650 U.S. libraries in a partnership where they provide free access to state-specific practice tests (free for the library and the patrons).

We would be happy to extend the same free driver's ed program to libraries in SD.

What's included? Your driver education program will contain the following state-specific information:

  • 10 car practice tests
  • 6 motorcycle practice tests
  • 3 CDL (Commercial Driver's License) practice tests
  • 3 online driver's manuals (car, motorcycle, CDL)
  • An FAQ section with detailed answers to 100+ DMV-related questions
