SOLO ARTISTS IN LIBRARIES (SAIL) -- AN ANNUAL SUMMER EVENT
The State Library and South Dakota Arts Council announce the annual Solo Artists in Libraries (SAIL) Project. The SAIL project is designed to bring a professional artist to public libraries for a five-day summer residency. The project is limited to towns with populations of 5,000 or less. The prospect of offering in-depth arts experiences for children ages 6-16 can be rewarding and exciting for the library and the children.
Grants of $900 will be awarded to eight public libraries selected to participate (July 1 - August 31). Preference will be given to new SAIL applicants. Each of the grants will support an artist-in-residence for five days in a public library. For each day of residency, the artist will be available for four hours. The SAIL program is designed to be flexible. Once the grant has been awarded, the artist and librarian will cooperatively plan the residency to meet the local library's interests and needs. Libraries in adjacent communities (within 30 miles) may work together in sharing a residency.
The South Dakota Arts Council's Arts Education Coordinator will assist with linking appropriate artists to project sites and will provide state-level coordination. Public libraries are responsible for local coordination and publicity.
EXPENSES
The $900 grant from the State Arts Council and the State Library will cover the cost of the artist's fee for the residency at $180/day for five days.
The local library is responsible for expenses incurred for supplies of workshop participants and for the artist's mileage reimbursement to and from the site at state rates ($.32 per mile). Travel and supplies are estimated to total between $150 and $250.
The local library is also responsible for providing the artist's lodging during the residency. Lodging need not be an additional cash expense for the library as private homes are acceptable accommodations. If the sponsor prefers, lodging at a local motel may be provided at the sponsor's expense.
Please complete the application (web or pdf) and print out and mail to: State Librarian, South Dakota State Library, 800 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501-2294. The State Library must receive the application no later than the second Friday in April. If you have questions, call 1-800-423-6665.
