AncestryLibrary: Tips & Solutions
If midway through a successful AncestryLibrary search, you are denied access to some of the items retrieved by the AncestryLibrary search, this problem is caused by a "bad" cookie, which has been placed on that specific "problem" microcomputer by ProQuest/AncestryLibrary when the the librarian/patron first accessed AncestryLibrary
To enable successful access to everything on AncestryLibrary from this "problem" microcomputer, this "bad" cookie must be cut (or removed). When cutting cookies, please close browsers.
- The cookie that needs to be deleted can be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\xxxx\Cookies\xxxx@ancestrylibrary[1].txt
[ The "xxxx" will be different for every user setting. For example, if the machine's user is "dchambers," the cookie that you would look for is C:\Documents and Settings\dchambers\Cookies\dchambers@ancestrylibrary[1].txt ]
This cookie can be found by right-clicking on the "Start" menu, choosing "Explore" and then on the appropriate folder. Once you click on the "Cookies" folder, you will see a list of cookies, all beginning with "xxxx@". - When you find the Ancestry Library cookie, click on it and click the "Delete" key.
- Alternately, you can delete all of your cookies by following this sequence of clicks: Tools, Internet Options, General Tab, Temporary Internet Files Section, click: Delete Cookies
- You should then be able to log in to Ancestry Library and access all retrieved items. If you still see the lock icon and this message "Sorry, we were unable to authenticate you." on some retrieved items, click on the locked items anyway and you should have access. As of May 27, the producer of AncestryLibrary is aware of this problem and was working on a solution..
