FOR LIBRARIANS: Technical Services - Magazines/Journals
Current awareness (for state employees)
This service is offered to help state employees stay current on issues related to their work.
How does a state employee activate the Current Awareness Service?
Contact Sarah Easter with a list of journals from which you would like to receive Table of Contents copies. If you are not certain which titles are available, you can request a listing of titles in your specific area of interest. This will be prepared and sent to you within a couple of days. Once you have submitted your list, the State Library will seek copyright clearance (if necessary) and can then begin the service.
How does it work?
Once appropriate copyright clearance for photocopying the contents pages has been obtained, State Library staff will automatically make a photocopy of the contents page each time a new issues is received. This photocopy will be sent to you via interoffice mail (or US Mail if your workstation is outside of Pierre). You will have an opportunity to review the contents of your favorite journals and to select the article(s) that is of most interest. This article can then be requested from the State Library from the Reference Division (773-5070). They will make a photocopy and forward it back to you. The copyright law limits the number of articles that you may request from a specific issue to one per request. the total number of requests that you can make during a year is not limited, but it is not legal to request more than one article per person per day.
Why participate in Current Awareness?
This service can save you both time and money. No one has unlimited time for scanning the many titles that might be available in your field of interest. No office has unlimited funds for subscribing to the many journals that might be of interest to the staff. this service provides an opportunity for state employees to "share" the same journals while keeping employees "current" with the latest news in their field of interest. No more waiting or routed copies!
What does this service cost?
There is no charge for this service.
Another option is to sign up for journal alerts sent to your email. See journal alerts.
