South Dakota State Government Publications are distributed to nine depository libraries in South Dakota by the State Library as part of the state publications distribution center and depository library system (SDCL 14-1A and ARSD 24:30:06). Each month State Library staff create a checklist which lists state publications received for distribution. Depository libraries may dispose of materials which are more than five years old or are superseded by newer editions or cumulations.
Descriptions of many but not all South Dakota Government Publications are included in the SDLN catalog, which may be searched by author, title, or subject. State Government publications are shelved according to the South Dakota Classification Schedule.
United States Government Publications are received by eight South Dakota libraries as selective depositories in the Federal
Depository Library Program. Included among these libraries is the South Dakota State Library, which has been a part of the
Federal Depository Library Program since 1973. Currently, the State Library receives about 36% of the documents published
annually by the Government Printing Office (GPO).
Descriptions of United States Government Publications are included in the SDLN catalog and the Catalog of Government Publications. For recent years, virtually all United States Government Publications in the State Library's collection are described there.
