netLibrary is a publisher of eBooks; these are books in electronic format. In South Dakota, netLibrary provides access to 10,000+ books from 230+ trade & academic publishers in electronic format, plus 3,400+ eBooks from the public domain.
netLibrary eBooks can be accessed on personal computers located within 370+ South Dakota libraries and on South Dakota campuses (academic, K-12, & SD government). Access netLibrary eBooks by either of two methods:
- by direct connection to netLibrary, using the links at top/bottom of this web page or on the State Library's homepage;
- via the hyperlinks found in SDLN catalog records that describe individual netLibrary eBooks. All 11,500+ eBooks are listed in the State Library's SDLN catalog (SDS). The hyperlinks (labeled ElectronicLinks) within the State Library's catalog (SDS) provide access to eBooks in all 370+ SD libraries and on their campuses . 20 other SDLN libraries have also included descriptions of many or all of these 11,500+ netLibrary eBooks within their catalogs. The ElectronicLinks in the catalogs of these libraries should provide access for patrons in those libraries and on their campuses..
- by direct connection to netLibrary, using the links at top/bottom of this web page or on the State Library's homepage. Remote users may be prompted to type in the 14-digit barcode and password from any library card issued by any SDLN-member library (this includes the library cards issued by the State Library).
- via the hyperlinks found in SDLN catalog records which describe individual netLibrary eBooks. All 11,500+ eBooks are listed in the State Library's SDLN catalog (SDS). When using these hyperlinks (labeled ElectronicLinks), remote users will be prompted to type in either:
- a personal, individual netLibrary account (the directions for creating this are further below)
- a barcode and password from a library card issued by any SDLN-member library (this includes the library cards issued by the State Library). Because this is a new option, the library card barcode & password will work for remote users only within the ElectronicLinks found in the State Library's catalog (SDS) and only on newer eBooks (most of these will have 2000+ copyrights).
A demo of netLibrary's eBooks, including audio, is available.
To create a personal, individual netLibrary user account, there are three "paths" that can be used:
- enter netLibrary from computers located in many full-member SDLN libraries including those at the State Library, as well as other SD school and public libraries; or
- enter the netLibrary website using the links at top/bottom of this web page or on the State Library's homepage; or
- call the State Library staff ( (605)773-5070 or 1-800-423-6665), and they help set up the account for you.
Funded by South Dakota taxpayers and by federal Library Services & Technology Act/LSTA monies, National American University, and Minnesota/North Dakota libraries through MINITEX, the SD State Library makes netLibrary eBooks available free-of-charge throughout SD.
For Librarians, additional information on netLibrary is available.
