RE: Library Distribution
For many years the South Dakota State Library has supplemented local library services by collecting popular fiction, children's picture books, and a wide range of non-fiction, all of which were available for public check out from the State Library. Now, as we move forward with the new mission of the State Library, we will no longer be collecting in these areas. Many of the materials currently owned and housed by the State Library need to be disbursed. We are, however, keeping South Dakota related materials, regional materials, and regional Native American materials. We hope to begin boxing materials by mid-March.
Based on recommendations in the reorganization plan for the South Dakota State Library, portions of the collection will be relocated to interested libraries.
Criteria for participation in this program are:
- By signed agreement, materials received from the State Library must continue to be publicly circulated
- Libraries must have an automated circulation system that is Z39.50 compatible, or will have by January 1, 2009
- Libraries must be receiving city, county, or state funding
- Libraries should contact the State Library to make arrangements for the transfer of materials.
- The minimum amount of materials to be accepted is a box weighing no more than 40 pounds.
Note: the number of volumes in each box may vary - No specific genres or authors may be requested (books will be a random sampling)

- Libraries (public, school, or academic) in the same area may form a consortium if one library does not have the room to house the minimum amount of materials required, as long as all libraries meet the program participation criteria listed above
- If a library receives some materials that are not appropriate for the collection, they may opt to exchange with another library that meets the program participation criteria listed above
