Health Reference Meetings

In the fall of 2010 the South Dakota State Library was awarded a Consumer Health and Outreach Planning Award. The money was used to gather information about the use of health information in South Dakota's public libraries. A total of 98 libraries participated in this study- or roughly 87% of South Dakota's public libraries.

Nationally there is great interest in reaching local rural communities with current personal health information. Public Libraries are easily assessable and open a wide variety of hours each week. With their reference and outreach skills they are the perfect "community center" to provide this access and resources to their local citizens.

The South Dakota State Library would like to invite all public librarians and their trustees to a series of informational and planning forums throughout the state in February and March. During these meetings, we will present our survey findings, hear what rural libraries and librarians need and discuss how we should proceed.
