Children's & Youth Services | South Dakota Children's Book Awards | About

The Prairie Pasque Award was first given in 1987 to Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman. In 1998 the Prairie Valley Reading Council expanded the South Dakota Children's Book Awards to include the Prairie Bud Award. The annual awards nominations provide two booklists both fitting for instructional and recreational reading. Connections can be made between the Common Core State Standards for ELA and Literacy across all content areas as well as reading for enjoyment.

Permissions: Book jacket covers displayed through an affiliate contract with Barnes & Noble.

Overview and Detail Sources: Information compiled for each nominee comes from book details and overviews from publisher information as well as Find-a-Book South Dakota, AR Bookfinder, School Library Journal, social media and Barnes & Noble.

Text Complexity: To help teachers and librarians select Prairie Bud, Prairie Bloom, and Prairie Pasque books for classroom use, several measures of text complexity have been provided including a CCSS grade band specification, Lexiles used in Scholastic Reading Counts!, ATOS used in Accelerated Reader, and other suggested age/grade level information. CCSS grade band specifications are not available for Kindergarten through first grade and subsequently noted as "Not Applicable." If a CCSS grade band specification or readability measure does not exist, it is noted as "Not Applicable."

The Prairie Bud, Prairie Bloom & Prairie Pasque Children's Book Awards are sponsored by the South Dakota Library Association . Prairie Bud winners are determined by South Dakota PreK, kindergarten, and first grade students. Prairie Bloom winner are determined by South Dakota second and third grade students. Prairie Pasque winners are determined by South Dakota fourth and fifth grade students. Students are encouraged to read and give a star rating for any book they read from the masterlists of titles. The books receiving the most highest number of stars from the students win the awards. A committee of educators and librarians select the books nominated for the awards.
