Freegal: Music that you can keep

The South Dakota State Library has coordinated with Library Ideas, LLC to offer public libraries a discounted rate for its Freegal music service. Patrons of participating libraries will have access to millions of songs and thousands of music videos.


What is Freegal?

Freegal's library contains over 11 million songs and over 23,000 music videos. There are over 200 different genres from 80 different countries, gathered from 30,000 labels, including Sony's music catalog. New content is added daily. There are also free mobile apps for available for Apple and Android devices.

What is the Cost, and What will Patrons Get?

The annual fee is $500 to $3850 for virtually all libraries, and is based upon the library's population service area, annual circulation and number of library cards. There is also a one-time set up fee of $150. The annual subscription gives you:

  • Access by an unlimited number of patrons.
  • Each patron gets 3 downloads per week and streaming for 3 hours per day. The patron may keep and transfer any downloaded files, just like they had purchased them.
  • Unlimited access to the entire Freegal music catalog.

How Would Patrons Access it?:

Authentication is through one of five methods:

  • Library Ideas' Barcode Hosting
  • Username and Password
  • SIP 2
  • Patron API
  • Referring URL

Two webinars will be conducted by the vendor to familiarize you with the product and answer your questions.
