Library usage data now available

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota State Library Board got the first official look at this year's school and public library Data Digests at its meeting today in Pierre.

"The digests provide vital information about the services being provided at libraries across the state," said State Librarian Dan Siebersma.* "The State Library collects the data through various surveys and compiles it in one location to highlight the significant roles that libraries play in their communities."

This is the first year that the State Library has compiled a data digest that is specific to school libraries. During the 2009-2010 school year, school libraries hosted 133 book fairs and 42 family literacy events or activities. On an average day, school libraries circulate 12,205 items, host 959 class groups and welcome 12,271 students independently.

Superintendents, principals and school librarians can access their specific statistics online and see how their libraries compare to others in the state.

The Data Digest for public libraries has been a successful measurement of the effectiveness of libraries in their local communities for the last three years.

South Dakotans checked out more than 5.9 million library items in 2009, and public access computers were used more than 912,000 times. Public librarians answer 1,157 reference questions on an average day.

The South Dakota school and public library Data Digests are available online at Look for the Publications link.
