Head west for STEM learning at Boot Camp 2015

Check your summer calendars, school librarians! The fourth annual School Library Boot Camp will be held July 19-22 at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Bring a classroom teacher along to partner with you on a project you can co-teach in the 2015-16 school year.

Boot Camp instructors will present on the theme, "STEM in the 21st Century School Library." Students will explore genius hour, digital resources and curating tools, reading and researching like a scientist, plus participate in a field trip to the Sanford Underground Lab and more.

Registration deadline is June 5. Boot Camp is a BHSU course. Students must elect to register for two credits at either the undergraduate or graduate level. On the final day of the course the last activity will be the fourth School Library Summit, co-hosted by State Librarian, Daria Bossman and South Dakota Library Association Past President, Scott Ahola.

Please pre-register with the State Library. Information on credits, housing and meals will be sent to you directly once pre-registration is complete.



Cost

Boot Camp is a BHSU course.

Arrival Date: July 19, 2015, check-in time between 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Departure Date: July 22, 2015 (totaling 3 nights lodging),
check-out time 7-7:45 a.m. or after 3 p.m.

If not eating all of the meals the 2 Supper meals are mandatory. All other meals may be off campus if you want.

$2.15/ person/ night


Tuition: The fee of $80.00 is covered with a SDSL Scholarships for students.

Supply a letter from your School Administration saying that you have permission to attend camp. You will not have to add State Sales tax to your bill.

Please only make one check out to BHSU for lodging and meals. They will separate the funds for the departments involved.



Instructors

Boot Camp is a BHSU Methods course. Students must elect to register for two credits at either the undergraduate or graduate level. This class has evening mandatory participation.

  • 10:00 am-12:00 pm: Arrival and check into housing
  • 1:00 pm -7:00 pm: Class Time, includes dinner

Monday, July 20

  • 8:00 am-5:00 pm: Class Time, includes tour of Sanford Underground Lab
  • 5:00 pm-7:00 pm: Dinner in Deadwood, optional

Tuesday, July 21

  • 8:00 am-7:00 pm: Class Time, includes dinner

Wednesday, July 22

  • 8:00 am-3:00 pm: Class Time, includes lunch provided by SDLA
