The State Library hosts a Google Calendar of events including training webinars hosted by SDSL staff, database vendors and other library-related events.

SDSL Board Meetings

Authorized by Chapter 14-1 of the South Dakota Codified Laws, the SDSL Board directs State Library operation and assists and coordinates the other libraries throughout the state in providing services to the public.

School Achievement Through Libraries Award Program

This is an award program to recognize outstanding school library programs andprofessionals, and provides guidance in school librarianship best practices. Applicants will fulfill a task checklist through this selfpaced program in Canvas.

Public Library Survey

The Public Libraries Survey is an annual statistical survey of all public libraries in the U.S. The State Library makes the data available for use by SD public librarians and their stakeholders.

Survey runs February 1 through March 31.

School Library Survey Course

The State Library uses data collected from the School Libraries Survey (SLS) to track changes and trends in South Dakota School Libraries.

Complete only the survey OR complete the survey as a part of a 6 CECH course.

Survey runs March 4 - May 3.

Library Training Institute

Public Library Training Institute is a three-year program of continuing education for new library directors, support staff, and trustees of small public libraries. The focus of the curriculum is public libraries. There is a one-week in-person retreat the first week of June each year, and fully online training between summers

2025 School Librarian Leadership Retreat

The School Librarian Leadership Retreat is an in-person summer training opportunity for school librarians. It is being held at the end of the ExCITE! course as an optional in-person module for ExCITE! students but also open to other school librarians from across the state.

ExCITE! 2025

This on-line course focuses on the unique aspects of school librarianship and what it takes to create an impactful school library.

Hosted monthly via Zoom, the SDSL facilitates monthly chats for school, public, and academic libraries. These are informal chats to learn from colleagues and make connections.
