Mission:
The South Dakota State Library provides leadership for innovation and excellence in libraries and services to state government.
Divisions of the South Dakota State Library:
Access Services
Administers the purchasing and processing of library materials, circulation of library materials, interlibrary loan of library materials, and stack maintenance. In addition Access Services administers the Braille and Talking Book Library.
Braille and Talking Book Library
Provides equal access to print materials in a format acceptable to all citizens of South Dakota who cannot read standard print.
Cataloging and Metadata
Responsible for obtaining items and providing the logical organization and arrangement of materials within the collections of the South Dakota State Library for the benefit of the information needs of state employees, librarians, and staff.
Circulation
Assists users by providing access to library materials through efficient, on-going bookstacks management and effective circulation procedures. Interlibrary Loan facilitates access to materials not owned by the South Dakota State Library.
Digital Services
Develops online content and digitization of state publications and statistical reports. Maintains the Online State Publications (CONTENTdm Digital Collections) which includes State Agency documents, Libraries of South Dakota (photo gallery), and vertical files.
Library Outreach/ LSTA
Provides assistance to South Dakota libraries. Includes Children and Youth Services, Electronic Resources, and Continuing Education.
IMLS/ Federal Programs
The Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries (link is external) and 35,000 museums. Our mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. Our grant making, policy development, and research help libraries and museums deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive.
