ExCITE! 2024

Join us this July for an on-line course focusing on the unique aspects of school librarianship and what it takes to create an impactful school library. Topics will include Implementing Policy and Procedure, Managing Behaviors Like a Pro, Practicing the Power of the Pause, Advocating for the School Library, Collaborating and Connecting Locally and Globally, Transforming the Library Space, Facilitating Innovative Programming, Understanding Current Trends, and Leading from the Library. This is a professional development opportunity specifically for school librarians, other school library staff, and anyone interested in becoming a school librarian.

WHEN: July 1 - Aug. 2, 2024

WHO: All South Dakota school librarians, educators, and other library staff are welcome!

WHERE: Online via Canvas

COURSE CREDIT:

• 2 graduate or undergraduate credits through USF
• OR 30 CECHs offered by SDSL

Readings, viewings, activities, projects, and evaluations are designed to equal a total of 30 hours of your time.

COST AND REGISTRATION:
ExCITE! is provided for 30 librarians for free with funding from the South Dakota State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Registration will open March 5, 2024.

HOW: Instruction will be provided through asynchronous Canvas assignments. Instructional methods will include a digital learning platform, class discussion, independent forms of communication, collaborative innovation work time, and the use of digital tools. There will be an optional in-person module at the SD State Library in Pierre. Details below.

As a supplement to and in conjunction with ExCITE! 2024, SDSL's School Library Services is hosting the School Librarian Leadership Retreat. This will be an optional in-person session for ExCITE! students and will also be open to other school librarians from across the state. It is not required for ExCITE! students as part of the ExCITE! coursework; however, travel/meals/lodging will be covered for these students and they will earn an additional 15 CECHs on top of what they are already earning for the ExCITE! course. This will be a 1.5 day session with networking/socializing/collaborating time in addition to presentations from SDSL staff and others on important topics in school librarianship.
