The School Librarian Leadership Retreat is an in-person summer training opportunity for school librarians. It is being held at the end of the ExCITE! course as an optional in-person module for ExCITE! students but also open to other school librarians from across the state. The travel fees of the ExCITE! students are paid for. Participants will earn 15 CECHs OR 1 G/UG credit upon successful completion of the training. For ExCITE! students, these credits are in addition to what they are already earning for ExCITE!

Registration Details:

  • 30 spots are held for ExCITE! students (registration available upon enrolling in ExCITE!)
  • An additional 20 spots are available for other school librarians from South Dakota (registration available April 15)
  • *30 spots will be held for ExCITE! students until April 15. Unclaimed spots will be made available to non-ExCITE! students at that time.

The School Librarian Leadership Retreat is a 1.5-day in-person focused gathering designed to empower and inspire school librarians to enhance their leadership skills, share best practices, and explore innovative strategies for creating an impactful school library. It is also an opportunity for ExCITE! students to collaborate on their final projects.

Program Platform and Instructional Methods

The School Librarian Leadership Retreat is an in-person training in which participants will network, share ideas, participate in hands-on activities, and listen to knowledgeable speakers on the topics that were presented during this year's ExCITE! course.

The Department of Education, of which the SD State Library is a division, is excited to present a new professional learning platform.

All items in Instructure Canvas are considered "courses" within the platform even if they are webinars, workshops, conferences, or in-person events.
