The State Library recognizes public and academic library directors and staff who actively maintain and grow their professional skills. The certification program supports librarians in developing the knowledge needed to deliver high quality services to their communities.

Certification Schedule

  • Applications are due by 5 p.m. CT on the first Friday in August.
  • Certification is valid for three years.
  • Renewal requires 30 continuing education contact hours (CECH) completed within the three-year certification period.
  • Certificates are awarded at the fall SDLA conference.



Renewal Guidelines: Certification lasts three years; renewal requires 30 CECHs.



Acceptable Activities for CECH Credit

  • Training from SDSL, SDLA, or other recognized library organizations (including live or archived webinars). Documentation: Attendance certificate or CE Record Form.
  • Library, technology, or education conferences (SDLA, MPLA, ARSL, PLA, ALA, Internet Librarian, Computers in Libraries, TIE). Documentation: Attendance certificate or marked schedule.
  • Library science courses from accredited colleges or universities. Credit: 1 semester hour equals 15 contact hours. Documentation: Transcript.
  • Other relevant workshops or seminars not listed above. Requirement: Pre-approval from the State Library. Documentation: Contact Hours Approval Form.
