AncestryLibrary is a library version of Ancestry.com's celebrated genealogical database that provides instant access to more than one billion names in more than 3,000 databases, including digital images of the 1790-1940 US Censuses, as well as immigration, vital, court, church, and ethnic records; city directories, genealogical societies, Social Security Death Index, family history library, Civil War Pension Index, and 700 historical maps.
AncestryLibrary can be accessed exclusively on personal computers located within SD libraries and on SD campuses (academic, K-12, & SD government). Library card bar-code numbers and passwords CANNOT be used to access AncestryLibrary.
Due to contract limitations with database producer, myfamilyinc.com , remote/home access to AncestryLibrary is NOT possible. AncestryLibrary is available only on equipment whose static, external/public IP addresses are listed on ProQuest IP Address Registers (or IP filters).
Funded by South Dakota taxpayers and by federal Library Services & Technology Act/LSTA monies, the SD State Library makes AncestryLibrary databases available free-of-charge throughout South Dakota.
Compatible browser information
As of June 15, 2014, Ancestry Library Edition will no longer be supported in the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) web browser. Depending on operating system implementation, this may affect some locations more than others.
As you may have heard, Microsoft recently stopped support of the Windows XP operating system. Internet Explorer 8 is actually the latest version of that web browser available to that OS. If your location is still running Windows XP on your machines, this message impacts you the most as it will be necessary to switch to a newer OS altogether in order to get a newer version of that web browser. If you are currently running Windows Vista, you do have the option of upgrading to Internet Explorer 9 for the time being, but Ancestry Library Edition also has plans to phase out support for all versions of IE except IE11 (the current version) in the coming months. Updating to IE11 requires your computers to be running at least Windows 7.
Please note that Ancestry.com still continues to fully support the latest versions of Firefox, and Chrome in the Windows operating environment. If you do not have the option of moving off of Windows XP, you are encouraged to switch to one of those alternate browsers in order to have the best experience possible
Of interest to those researching local history and family histories. Includes U.S. Federal Census records from 1790 thru 1940, immigration records, military records, the Social Security Death Index, the family history library and more.
Access: library and school campus
