• The Public Libraries Survey (PLS) collects statistical data from all U.S. public libraries.
  • The survey runs annually, Feb. 1 - March 31, in South Dakota.
  • The State Library includes additional questions to gather administrative data and support library development planning.
  • Per state statute SDCL 14-2-40, all designated South Dakota public libraries are required to complete this annual report.



South Dakota Public Libraries Facts & Stats: The SDSL compiles an annual statistical snapshot of the activities of South Dakota's public libraries as reported via the Public Libraries Survey.

Survey responders may access the PLS survey form through your library's account at sd.countingopinions.com. The online form includes links to supporting files and tutorials.

How to download prior years' surveys:

  1. Log into your library's account.
  2. Select Public Library Survey from the Collection dropdown.
  3. Choose the year from the Period dropdown menu.
  4. Select Print at the top of the Data Input screen.
  5. Select Print/Save Report to download a PDF version.
